Going Beyond Earth Hour – Making A Family Pledge
During lunch today, I reminded my kids that this evening is Earth Hour. We have been joining this global event since 2008. During this hour, we usually sit around the table and play board games over a candlelight dessert. So when the kids asked me what we will be doing during ‘lights out’ tonight, I told them that we will make a family pledge.
This year’s Earth Hour theme is “Going Beyond the Hour”. With all the recent unfortunate natural disasters we have been experiencing globally, this theme couldn’t be any more apt.
So in going beyond the hour, the family will be making a serious commitment to help save the Earth by way of a written pledge that we will all sign during Earth Hour.
I also made a worksheet to provide us a journal on the actions that we would be taking in taking care of the environment. In this worksheet, we will be listing specific things that we have done in protecting our land, air, water as well as things that we have recycled and re-used. A section in the worksheet will also be used to list new things that we have learned about environment.
I’m really hoping that this will work well for us. To be compiled and bound as a journal, it will be good to read back through these pages after some time and see the family’s effort in this major task of protecting the environment.
At the start, it will surely be a big effort on the family to accomplish this, we may not even be able to completely fill it up. Also, taking action would probably be more like making sacrifices than helping out. But in the long run, I hope that these actions will turn into wholehearted and natural ones.
I encourage you to do the same and give a good try on taking action to protect the environment. Feel free to use the pledge form and the journal worksheet. I have uploaded both the Pledge and the Environmental Awareness Journal Worksheet in the Study Tools section of the website under charts category.
Let’s do our part and save the Earth!
