Hirap ka ba sa Filipino? This Library can Help

Posted on: August 9th, 2011 by

It all began with one mother who asked: “I love your reading programs, but can you help my child with Filipino as well?  It’s the one subject he’s not good at, and the only subject I can’t help him with!”  Thus, The Learning Library’s highly successful WIKA’y GALING! program was born.

From Beginning Filipino (vocabulary building) and Filipino Communication Skills (speaking and listening comprehension skills), to Reading Comprehension (including the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo) and Writing in Filipino (preparation for high school), WIKA’y GALING! offers a complete program to address the special needs of children who speak Filipino as a non-primary language.

What makes WIKA’y GALING! so successful?  The program is highly experiential, rooted in Philippine culture, and anchored on actual children’s literature.  “Simply put, we make Filipino relevant and fun!” says Vanessa Bicomong, general manager of The Learning Library.  “Some kids start quite reluctantly in our workshops, only to end up liking it so much that they refuse to do anything but Filipino on Saturday mornings!”

The Learning Library is not just about Filipino, however.  Its READING ADVANTAGE program takes children all the way from letters and sounds to high school-level writing skills.  All programs are literature based and utilize over 4,000 of the world’s best children’s books.

The Learning Library uses the Lexile measure, a system that matches a student’s ability with the difficulty of the reading material. A computerized assessment ensures that children who read well are given a challenging reading list, while children who don’t are provided support and encouragement. “Our mission is to develop not just the skill, but the love of reading.  A child who reads more, reads well and learns better,” Bicomong adds.

Teachers at The Learning Library (called Reading Coaches) are chosen not just for teaching skills, but their actual love of reading.  They are highly trained by in-house reading experts to assess each child’s particular needs and to tailor-fit the reading program accordingly.  Like everyone who is part of The Learning Library, they believe that reading is the key to a child’s success — in school and beyond.
