Peace Be With You.. Celebrating World Peace Day
Today, the 21st of September 2013, is International Day of Peace or commonly known as World Peace Day. As the day falls on a Saturday, my kids’ school celebrated it yesterday… not a big hoopla, but a simple discussion on peace and a moment of silence held at noon.
For this year, the UN theme for the 2013 International Day of Peace is “Education For Peace”. I am very happy that my kids’ school took part in it.
They were asked to wear a shirt with a peace, love or hope theme. I had no time to go to the mall and I wasn’t even certain if I could find these themed shirts at all. So I just had the kids design their own shirts. I’m glad to have found inexpensive textile paint sets at the local bookstore. There was no need for me to buy big bottles of textile paints in each color.
The designs were completely their idea. One had “Make Peace with the World” and the other one had “Peace is what we do!”
Overnight air-drying was sufficient and the next day, off they went to school wearing the shirts they proudly made.
International Day of Peace was set by the United Nations in 1981 and it was meant to be a day devoted “to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.” Everyone is reminded that each one is an instrument of peace and we are encouraged to re-commit ourselves to always promote peace.
So today at 12 o’clock noon, let’s take a moment of silence and dedicate it to our hope for peace.. for ourselves, our community, our nation and the world.
