How P-Noy can unknowingly annoy his countrymen

Posted on: May 21st, 2012 by

First, let me tell you that this is not a political blog and that this is not a political article. I’m writing this as a wife and as a mother who gets upset when a family event gets spoiled.

Yesterday was hubby’s birthday and we spent almost the entire day just hanging around in one of our favorite places, Eastwood City. We ended the day with a sumptuous dinner at Crisostomo and though we were stuffed to our necks, we still had room for dessert.

Next door was the newly opened Swensen’s Ice Cream and so we thought we’d try it. We were seated outside as it was already packed inside. We ordered the Firehouse birthday ice cream which included a birthday candle and a polaroid photo.

We were waiting for our order when we noticed a group of people come by the restaurant. My husband even said they seemed like security people. My back was to the corridor so I didn’t know that at that time more people were coming.

Soon after, our dessert came and I was even surprised that a few of the staff came out and sang a birthday song to my husband. I had my Bloggie out and was taking a video of them singing and lighting the candle when a hand tapped my shoulder and I was told “ma’am paki-off ang camera.” (Ma’am please turn off your camera). I stopped the video (which I now regret).

I looked at the man, bewildered. I told him, “Birthday ng asawa ko” (It’s my husband’s birthday).. this happening during the birthday song.. Then he said again, “bawal po talaga mag-camera” (really, cameras are not allowed). I turned my head and saw Pres. Noynoy Aquino headed to one of the tables. I said, in disbelief, “My God!” (sorry, Lord, for using you as an expression) thinking that what harm would happen if he had just let me finish taking a video of the song and have my husband blow the candle.

When the song ended, the servers quickly left us. We didn’t even get that Polaroid photo shot. From then on, I was so upset, I was probably just a breath short of ranting out loud.

Nevertheless, I still wanted to mark the moment and snuck a photo of hubby and the kids using my cellphone camera. As expected, the photo didn’t turn out well as I had no time to frame them well in may camera phone.

By this time the ice cream had melted and I told the kids to eat quickly. We didn’t enjoy the ice cream. Not wanting to stay any much longer, we paid the bill and left.

I was so annoyed… really annoyed… more with the disruption of a moment than not having a photo or video.

To Pres. Noynoy – your PSG spoiled a special family moment. Couldn’t he have at least given some consideration and let me at least finish the video of the birthday song? We were already there before all of you came. I had my camera out for my family, not for you or anyone else.

To Swensen’s – you owe me a polaroid photo. Please don’t tell me that I should’ve asked for it. Yes, your server may have forgotten due to the commotion of the president’s arrival, to which again I refer to the title of this blog. But it doesn’t matter, we can’t retake a birthday moment anyway.

By the time we left the building, we saw the motorcade of security vehicles leave the compound as well. The president had his just desserts… we didn’t.
