October is National Children’s Month

In pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No.267, October is celebrated as National Children’s Month to underscore the importance of the role of the child in the Filipino family and in Philippine society. In support of this year’s activity the Department of Education and Culture (DepEd) issued Memorandum No. 382 series of 2010 together with the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) set this year’s theme: “Kung Bright Child ang Gusto, Mundo’y Ingatan Mo!

As mandated by the Constitution, the promotion and protection of physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being of children is the duty and responsibility of the government.

DepEd encourages all department heads of the bureau of education, regional offices and schools to engage time on task child related activities in lieu of the celebration such as conduct of lectures, camping, children’s congress, contests to showcase talents of children like poster and slogan making contest, photo exhibit and children’s fair and others. Children’s Month intends to emphasize the importance of the role of the child within the Filipino family and Philippine society. The month also highlights and supports the campaign to end violence against children and to convey to the public that even with the economic, political, social, moral and environmental crisis, there is still hope for the children to achieve their dreams in life.

National Children’s Month opens the door to look at the lives of children across the globe that is denied access to basic health care. Additionally Children’s Health Month looks at the effect of HIV/AIDS, preventable diseases, malnutrition and poverty and preventable illnesses such as malaria, on children around the world. This years’ theme also creates emphasis on preservationof our environment. This refers to protection against destruction and minimization pollution for children’s health.

An array of activities is lined up by both public and private sectors especially for less fortunate children of remote barangays with the assistance of LGU and NGO. In the past years a momentous days every month of October for children are inculcated in their minds for the rest of their lives.
