Who is Pedro Calungsod?

Posted on: October 21st, 2012 by schoolkidph

Earlier in the week, I overheard the kids discussing about what happened in school that day. They were talking about the story on Pedro Calungsod, a Filipino martyr to be declared saint by the Catholic church on the 21st of October. I asked them if they could retell the story in a quick video.

My kids study in a Catholic school run by Jesuits. So, I was not surprised that they would be told about this coming historical event on Pedro Calungsod’s canonization as the blessed martyr was a missionary aid of a Jesuit priest. What did surprise me was the impact that his life story would merit a good conversation piece over a mid-afternoon snack. I was told that they learned about Pedro Calungsod in the classroom, where they had his life story told by watching a video and through a discussion with their own teachers.

Here’s their video. These are from their own words (which you know how kids can be animated with) and as how they recalled it so there might be a bit of inaccuracy..but nevertheless, they seemed to have gotten the gist of it.

Pedro Calungsod’s canonization today is indeed a momentous day for the Filipino Catholic community. Whether we share the same faith or not, his life story can be seen as one of a man who died a hero, as my kids explained “he was brave, helpful to others, and fought for what he believed in.”… another person to be admired and whose life story is to serve as an inspiration to all.
